  2. who Said,

I’v tried everything but it wont drill, cut or grind without it shattering…..believe me your stuck with a normal 56 windsheild…you’ll see I made that mistake! No stop were Talking about a 56 dont dew it…thats a priceless windsheild, where are you going to get another if you attempt it

  3. Uncle Red Said,

I’m betting it has been replaced with a safety glass which is two tempered layers with a piece of plastic sandwiched. You can have it cut at a glass shop. that way they break they pay…

  4. McLaren Said,

The windshield is safety glass. There are two layers of glass with a plastic membrane sandwinched in the center. In theory it is not difficult to cut, but in practice it’s a whole other ball game. You score both sides and snap the glass like you would any other piece of glass, heat the cut slightly to just melt the plastic membrane, cut the membrane with a razor blade, and finally grind the edge smooth. A friend of mine used to work at a glass shop and showed me how to do it, but every time I’ve tried it mine ended up in the dust pan. If you need it cut for whatever reason, take it to a glass shop, there is somewhat of an art to cutting that stuff. They do make reproduction 55-56-57 windshields, contrary to what has been mentioned. They are $200 brand new.

  5. stealth Said,

McLaren is right on. Also, any glass shop I’ve ever dealt with WILL NOT GUARANTEE against breakage. If it breaks, it’s yours!!!! If you go this route, be sure to ask them about breakage… Good luck!

  6. whitaxle Said,

Mclaren is right your Chevy will have ‘laminated’ glass i.e 2 layers of glass with a polyvynil interlayer. A steady hand and a good oil filled glass cutter is required. I do this for a living and have had a few ‘accidents’ But as they say ‘practise makes perfect!’
Any good windshield shop should be able to do this for you.
Not recommended for the ‘first timer’ or novice!
Good Luck! Unfortunately most places will not accept responsibility for ‘breakage’ We make it very clear before we take on a job that things can and do go wrong!
As the old addage says ‘measure twice, cut once!’
