blackhawk 06-08 asked:
the car originally had a 409 ci motor. it still has the 409 emblems but has a 350 4 bolt main in it now. the car hasn’t been restored yet but is in really good condition. it has a very little cancer on quarter panels and a little on the hood. it also has a muncie 4 speed tranny and car runs. other than that, body is straight. is the car worth $3500 without the 409 and with a 350? if so where can i find a 409 to try to keep it as original as possible? i would greatly appreciate help on this matter!

hold on to the engine its gona be worth more than that in a few years 409 is a hard engine to find. or if you restore the car it would be worth more with this engine.
as for how much the car is worth go to and see how much the car is going for. or just go to nada.com and put in your specs in classic cars and see how much it retails for might be better off restoring and then selling.
Blackhawk, had you asked this question I could have told you about an auction in Cinci,Oh where a lot of 409 and 348 parts were auctioned off. Also,is it an SS Impala or Biscayne? What options are on it? (air, tinted windows, auto level control?) Is it an original 4 spd or had the flooorboard cut out to take a 4 spd.? With these cars the frame is what matters. Is it rusted through where it meets together under the car?Floorboards, are they intact or rusted through? I have a 1964 409 SS and if you aren’t interested I might be if you and the car are near Cinci. Oh. So contact me ,please
I would think it is worth $3500 unless it is a real pile of junk. The 350 is a good engine & easy to get parts for, and I would keep it.
If you are going to restore the car to like new stock Then you need the corectly date stamped engine and transmission. The vin plate should tell you what was origanal to the car. 409 parts are spendy and rare!
I would say its worth it if its not a rot box. Like previously stated check the frame out good. I searched fro years to get a 409 for my 55 Chevy. I came up with one but needs a cylinder sleeved due to someone letting water get in and freeze. They are hard to come by and are like gold. you could restore the car with the 350 and keep an eye out for a 409 and swap it in later.
Hi, around $10000Au
I just sold mine, it needed a full restoration amd i mean a major resto for $3000 so if yours is driveable and in a descent cond i would recommend around that price.
however there are lots of idiots out there that think there cars are worth heaps like monaros and ask ridiculous prices when they are not worth it, use this figure as a guide only as i have not sighted your car. if in doubt buy a just world cars mag and check the value chart at the back. or wreck it, a good grille alone will cost anywhere from 500-800 bucks
I am assuming it is a two door and it is worth it even without the 409 because most people bought the Impala models and as a result few Bel-Air’s are around. If it isn’t well enough preserved to restore original, you may want to think about a 502 CID crate. Good luck.
value is hard to determine, KBB.com is the best way that I know how to assess the value. Are you sure it is a 350? the 409 was a small block 4bolt main engine, not a mid-block like the 327, or the 383. you will need to mic the engine to know the truth. some people in the late 60’s and early 70’s also liked changing the stickers on the valve covers, and breather cover to make their friends think they put some money in the car for the track.
